Botox ® Cosmetic is the brand name of purified Botulinum toxin, type A (BTX-A) produced by Allergan from Irvine, CA. BTX-A is produced by Clostridium botulinum bacteria and weakens muscle activity by blocking the nerve impulse to the muscle. When injected, the effect is usually noticeable at 48 hours and achieves its maximum effect at 1 to 2 weeks. Most of these effects are reversed by 3 to 4 months, although some people may exhibit a persistent decrease in muscle activity for up to 12 months.
The use of BTX-A dates back to the 1970’s for the treatment of blepharospasm (eye muscle spasm). Since that time it has been used effectively for spastic dysarthria (vocal cord spasm) and for muscle spasm in paraplegics. It was recently FDA approved for use in the cosmetic reduction of forehead wrinkles.
Like many prescription medications (coumadin, digitalis, morphine, and countless others), Botox is safe in recommended, physician-prescribed doses, and toxic if those doses are exceeded. The total amount injected in a single treatment session is less than 100 units ( toxic dose for an average-sized person is 2500 to 3000 units). To date no systemic complications have been reported. Possible side effects include local numbness, swelling, bruising, or a burning sensation during injection. As of 2014, 11 million people have been given Botox injections, making it the most popular non-operative Plastic Surgery procedure in the United States.
Botox reduces dynamic wrinkles and is especially effective for frown lines in the lower central forehead and squint lines in the crow’s feet area. Prominent wrinkles at rest may require other techniques, such as injection of filling materials like Restylane ®, Juvéderm ®, Belotero ® or autologous (your own) fat. Redundant forehead skin producing brow ptosis (low-set brows) is better managed with one of several brow lifting methods.
At Spa Niagara, your evaluation and treatment for Botox ® Cosmetic will be given by a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon.
